Here's a description of the program I can offer to your school, a conference or a general workshop:

Reading and Writing with Randy Beard

Objectives
1. Motivate the reluctant reader and writer.

2. Share with teachers and parents an alternative way to encourage the emergent reader to read and write.

3. Illustrate how a student's creative writing skills can be refined putting his/her own writing to music.

4. Build student's self-esteem and confidence by showcasing his/her writing.

Method
I start the session with a song to get the participants involved. The students will have poems/creative writings of about four to eight lines in length prepared prior to the program. The poems/writings can be written individually, in groups or as an entire class. I create songs using the writings and original music that I place with the students' lyrics. I sing the songs on the spot so there is no need to send me the words prior to the program. Keep in mind that the poems/creative writings do not have to rhyme. My program is very impromptu and encourages everyone's participation!

I will also share some trade books to demonstrate how adding traditional melodies and original music can enhance interest in reading.
